...our 1930 Elco Marinette, hull #2723 that has been re-powered with an elco electric motor, six LiFeP0 batteries and now a genset to give us virtually unlimited range. We named her Volta firstly for the inventor of the electric battery, Italian physicist Alessandro Volta (1745–1827). Volta is also the poetic term for a rhetorical shift or dramatic change in thought or emotion. We have shifted from our sailboat cruising trips to electric cruising, which is a dramatic change for us. It's also the Italian word for "turn" and Greek for "walk." As this is a slow cruiser (6 knots at the most) we will be walking, rather than running, on the water. "Volta" is also a river in Ghana where the White Volta and the Black Volta converge to simply become the "Volta." We like the idea of black and white joining to become one awesome river. This website is all about our dear Volta. |
